This is back in the Ngorongoro crater for the second time. To be honest, although we did get quite close I don't think that lion was in any condition to attack. It did sit up and look at us once, but judging by it's laboured breathing, that may have been the extent of it's abilities. I was still hoping it might at least take a swipe at someone.

I was told a story, although I have not been able to confirm it, of a German tourist who was killed in recent years by a lion in the Masai Mara park. Apparently they were trying to take a picture of a lion, but thought the composition would be better if it were nearer the watering hole. When honking and gesturing were of no help, one of them decided to get out and give the lion an encouraging kick in the right direction. At this point he was killed. I can't say I believe the story entirely, but if it is true I hope the survivor got the great picture he was looking for.

Nothing too special about the last animals, except they were from the Lake Manyara park in Tanzania, near the crater. The highlight of that day was the lunch break in the park. Jake and I wandered off to go look at some tree, possibly baobab, when someone got a bright idea (I want to say me but I think it was him). We came sprinting (for me anyway, corresponds to an average person's jog) out of the forest yelling "get in the truck", sending everyone scurrying for safety. I'll have to admit I only made it about halfway back before collapsing in laughter. Seeing people scared is almost as funny as seeing them get hurt.

The last 2 pictures are from the campsite just outside Dar Es Salaam. After about the first week in Africa I gave up using insect repellant thinking I was unappetizing to African bugs. One night I fell asleep outside (passed out, whatever), in my shorts and t-shirt, no repellant and didn't get a single bite, while people in tents were getting eaten alive in their sleeping bags. Turns out, it's just mosquitos. I found out in a beach hut that bed bugs find me quite appetizing.
