The Ngorongoro crater in Tanzania, apparently the world's largest unbroken caldera (collapsed volcano I think, can't be bothered to look it up). 15 to 20 km in diameter, with a rim of about 500 to 600m, basically a big bowl full of animals...not to be mistaken with zoodles. I think I was with the discount tour. I don't think most people have to push start their land rover in the middle of the park. The silhouetted bird ate my entire sandwich before I got my first bite. Apparently I was told before not to have food outside, but somehow I missed it, and was thus incredibly startled when I got dived bombed by that thing. And for my perverted friends (I think that's most of them), some lions and baboons doing it...although not with each other, which would have been cool. That night, instead of camping on the crater rim as planned, we ended up staying in a 4 star hotel on the rim (whether that's out of a possible 5 stars is questionable). It only cost an extra $5 or so as long as you claimed you were with a Tanzanian owned tour operator. It was here that I was humiliated by Paul on one of those giant outdoor chess boards at about 2:30 in the morning. We should have taken the hint when we had to use a multi-tool to get the door to the patio open, and the lights were shut off once we were out there. I knew my headlamp would prove useful. In defence of my loss, when I sacrificed it I thought the cement bag that was filling in for one of the missing pieces was a bishop, when in fact it was my queen. Plus I was drunk, very drunk. And I'm not very good at chess. |
